Earthquake statement from Bursa Governor Mahmut Demirtaş: 'There is no destruction'

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred with its epicenter in the Gemlik Gulf of the Sea of Marmara. Three minutes after the earthquake, another tremor measuring 4.5 magnitude occurred in the region. The earthquake was felt particularly in Istanbul and surrounding provinces.

"NO NEGATIVE INCIDENTS"

Demirtaş stated that there have been no negative incidents reported so far and conveyed his best wishes to all citizens. The Governor emphasized that they are in constant communication with district governors, public institutions, neighborhood heads (muhtars), and mayors, and are working actively in the field.

He further stated that there is no destruction or distress. He noted that the public will be informed as developments occur.

The 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Gemlik Gulf of the Sea of Marmara at 10:42 was felt throughout Bursa and in a large part of Istanbul. According to initial assessments, there was no loss of life or property. The earthquake caused panic among citizens, and people living or working in high-rise buildings, in particular, took to the streets to ensure their safety.

AFTERSHOCKS OCCURRED

Following the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Bursa, two more aftershocks measuring 4.5 at 10:45 and 3.5 at 10:57 occurred in the same region.
