Call from former MP expelled from CHP to Özel and Kılıçdaroğlu: 'Address the corruption allegations...'

Yılmaz Ateş, a former CHP Ankara MP who resigned from the party in 2019 and whose request for amnesty was rejected in 2024, sent a letter to Nefes columnist Aytunç Erkin.

In his letter, Ateş outlined his suggestions for resolving the problems within the CHP.

"The CHP must strengthen its internal front as soon as possible. Neither the previous administration nor our current administrators have the right or the luxury to be at odds with one another," said Ateş, adding, "To this end, Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu and Mr. Özel must come together as soon as possible to resolve internal party issues. Internal party issues are not solved through the judiciary, but through party ethics, principles, and party law. The CHP must first address corruption allegations using party law."

Ateş's letter is as follows:

"I served for 20 consecutive years in the SHP and CHP at every level, starting from neighborhood delegate up to Deputy Chairman, and served as a member of parliament for three terms. For this reason, I follow your articles about the CHP with great interest and find them very valuable.

The CHP is Turkey's party of liberation and foundation. While Turkey has a multitude of domestic and foreign problems, it is unacceptable for the CHP to come to the public agenda with its own internal problems. The CHP must strengthen its internal front as soon as possible. Neither the previous administration nor our current administrators have the right or the luxury to be at odds with one another.

To this end, Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu and Mr. Özel must come together as soon as possible to resolve internal party issues. Internal party issues are not solved through the judiciary, but through party ethics, principles, and party law. The CHP must first address corruption allegations using party law.

The two leaders should announce to the public not only the resolution of internal party issues but also the CHP's contributions regarding the ongoing wars in our region and global issues.

The CHP should prioritize projects that can be implemented with its own resources and should not beg for mercy or compassion from the ruling bloc. A CHP that does not solidify its internal front will not receive interest or support from the public or other opposition parties. The CHP must establish its internal hierarchy. Each body should focus on its own authority and area of responsibility and stop communicating through the public eye. We must not forget that the future of the democratic, secular Republic of Turkey is above all of our futures."
