Call from Germany on Syria: 'All parties must fulfill their responsibilities'

Discussions regarding the future of Syria continue following the fall of the Assad regime. Following the statement by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who emphasized the integrity of Syria, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also made assessments on the subject.

In a statement on the social media platform X, Baerbock stated that the crimes committed by Assad must be held to account. Saying, "It is difficult to say exactly what is happening in Syria," Baerbock drew attention to the oppression of the Assad regime and stated the following:

"The end of Assad means a great relief for millions of Syrians. Hundreds of thousands of people died in the civil war, and millions were displaced. Assad must be held accountable for the crimes he committed against his people. The Syrian people deserve a better future after the great suffering they have endured."

Baerbock emphasized that ethnic and religious minorities, especially Kurds, Alawites, and Christians, must be protected. "We call on the parties to the conflict to fulfill their responsibilities toward all Syrians," she said.

The German Foreign Minister also stated that they are in close cooperation with regional actors such as Turkey and Jordan. Baerbock expressed that if these actors act in the interests of the Syrian people, the path to peace could be opened.
