Canada's Ambassador to Ankara announces: Mining operation in Erzincan does not belong to Canada

According to a report by Gerçek Gündem, Canada's Ambassador to Ankara, Kevin Hamilton, stated today that Canada is not among the partners of Anagold Mining, which operates the Çöpler Gold Mine in the İliç district of Erzincan, where a cyanide-tainted landslide occurred.

"THE CANADIAN COMPANY WAS NEVER THE OWNER OF THE MINE IN ERZINCAN"

In his written statement regarding the matter, Hamilton noted the following:

"The mine is a joint venture between Turkish and American companies.

The American company SSR Mining is the result of a merger between a former Canadian company based in Vancouver and a US-based company called Alacer Gold. Alacer Gold holds the original ownership of the Erzincan mine. The now-defunct Canadian company was never the owner of the mine in Erzincan.

The newly merged company took the name SSR Mining and established its headquarters in Denver, Colorado, in 2020.

Like many international mining companies, SSR Mining is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. However, this does not mean that the company is a Canadian company.

SSR Mining is also traded on the NASDAQ and the Australian stock exchange."

"THE OPERATION DOES NOT BELONG TO CANADA"

Hamilton also made the following post on his social media account:

"Very sad news has come from Erzincan. Our thoughts are with the trapped workers and their families. We are encouraged by the rapid reaction of AFAD and the rescue teams as they continue their heroic efforts.

We have seen some media outlets report that the mine where the landslide occurred belongs to Canada. This is not true. The mining operation in Erzincan does not belong to Canada."
