Cartoon by Hicabi Demirci leaves its mark on the night

Following the decision by Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray not to take the field in the Super Cup match in Riyadh after Saudi officials refused to allow them to wear Atatürk t-shirts, the move resonated throughout Turkey. Cartoonist Hicabi Demirci, who is also well-known to the Turkish press, left his mark on the night with the cartoon he shared after the events. 

The master artist illustrated a dialogue between Atatürk and the football players, summarizing the night so perfectly that the cartoon received great acclaim on social media.

Who is Hicabi Demirci?

Hicabi Demirci was born in June 1968 in the village of Kocapınar, Samsun. He spent his primary, secondary, and high school years in various parts of Anatolia. He graduated from Ankara Gazi High School in 1985 and from the Faculty of Science and Letters at Ankara University in 1992. His journey with drawing, which began in his childhood, found its own path over time and met with caricature. During his university years, he spent a long time in an animation workshop he joined to stay connected to drawing. He also wrote scripts for animated films during his animation work. In 1998, his short animated film titled "Ufuktaki Ada" (Island on the Horizon), for which he wrote the script, served as animator, and directed, was screened at the Nuremberg Film Festival in Germany and reached the finals. The same film also met with audiences at the Ankara Film Festival. He designed the poster for the 2000 Istanbul International Short Film Festival. He carried out illustration and storyboard work for various agencies in the advertising sector. He produced numerous works in the field of graphics, including book and magazine cover projects. For a period, his cartoons were published in the Radikal İki and Milliyet Pazar supplements. He has been deemed worthy of a total of 45 awards in national and international cartoon competitions. In 2005, he published his personal album titled "Şeytantırnağı / Hangnail". Having worked as an illustrator for Radikal and Sözcü newspapers for many years, Demirci was awarded in the cartoon category at the 2013 Yunus Nadi Awards.
