Caught with 44 kilos of drugs: Former AKP district head sentenced to 10 years in prison

The court has delivered its verdict in the case of Servet Can, who previously served as the AKP District Head in the Kayapınar district of Diyarbakır, after he was caught with 44 kilograms of cannabis in his vehicle in Hakkari.

According to a report by Özgür Cebe from Nefes, the trial of Servet Can and construction worker Metin Gürgen, both charged with drug trafficking, has concluded.

NOTABLE DEFENSE IN COURT

During the trial, Servet Can argued in his defense that because he had previously served as an AKP district head, he had a protection order and that the two license plates found in his vehicle had been allocated to him for that reason.

Can stated that a shopkeeper had asked him to take cigarettes to Diyarbakır, saying, "A shopkeeper told me to take 30 cartons of cigarettes to Diyarbakır and that they would pick them up from me there. I set off with 4 suitcases as a favor."

Can also provided an explanation regarding the dollars found on his person, claiming that he had the money with him because he was planning to travel to Iran.

"METİN GÜRGEN PUT THE DRUGS IN MY VEHICLE"

Denying the charges in his defense, Servet Can explained that he had met with Metin Gürgen in Yüksekova and that they had eaten together.

Can alleged, "It was Metin who put the drugs in my vehicle. He has made this his profession. He used me as well."

METİN GÜRGEN DENIED THE ACCUSATIONS

Metin Gürgen, who was tried without arrest in the case, did not accept the accusations against him.

In his defense in court, Gürgen stated, "Servet Can is a former AK Party district head. Since he cannot reach the owners of the goods, he is slandering me."

COURT DID NOT FIND DEFENSES CREDIBLE

In its ruling, the court pointed out that a total of 44 kilograms of narcotics were seized in bags during the search of Servet Can's vehicle.

The ruling also included information that the defendant possessed a volunteer village guard identification card.

The court stated that it had reached the conclusion that Servet Can was transporting the narcotics for commercial purposes. It was noted that the defendant's statements during the investigation and trial process contradicted each other, and his defense was not deemed credible as these statements were considered attempts to evade criminal liability.

SENTENCE REDUCED TO 10 YEARS WITH GOOD CONDUCT REDUCTION

The court sentenced Servet Can to 12 years in prison and a judicial fine of 100,000 liras for the crime of "trafficking in narcotic or stimulant substances."

Subsequently, the court applied a good conduct reduction for the defendant, reducing the prison sentence to 10 years. It was also decided that Can's detention would continue.

ACQUITTAL FOR METİN GÜRGEN

An acquittal was issued for the other defendant in the case, Metin Gürgen.
