Chip-enabled ID card mandatory for title deed transactions: Old ID cards will be invalid in 2025

In Turkey, the old-style ID card has been replaced by the chip-enabled identity card. Obtaining the chip-enabled ID card, which simplifies identity verification, is mandatory. You can obtain your new ID card at civil registry offices by making an appointment online. Citizens who have business at the land registry office must update their IDs by January 1, 2025. This is because the use of old-style ID cards will be discontinued to ensure that title deed transactions are conducted more securely.

There is no specific deadline for replacing the old ID card. You can make an appointment to obtain your new ID card through the official website of the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs.

The documents required to obtain your new ID card are as follows:

Old ID card/identity card, international family register, passport, driver's license

Documents that serve as identification under the respective institution's own regulations

One biometric photograph

MANDATORY AFTER JANUARY 1, 2025

While there is no general deadline for ID replacement, the General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre has taken action. To ensure more secure title deed transactions, it will not be possible to conduct transactions with old-style ID cards as of January 1, 2025.

Accordingly, citizens who will conduct transactions at the land registry office must arrive at the institution with their chip-enabled ID cards. Citizens who have not renewed their IDs will be unable to buy or sell real estate.
