CHP's Başarır to AKP's Osman Gökçek: This is not your father's Twitter page

CHP's Başarır to AKP's Osman Gökçek: This is not your father's Twitter page

Gökçek's remarks, "You made Türkan Elçi, who said 'the PKK is not a terrorist organization,' a candidate," increased tensions in the General Assembly. Following Gökçek's words, CHP Ankara MP Okan Konuralp rose from his seat and ran toward the podium.

'SOCIAL MEDIA BULLY'

During the deliberations on the entirety of the Turkish Armed Forces Personnel Law in the TBMM General Assembly, CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır took the floor and criticized the social media post by AKP Ankara MP Osman Gökçek regarding the brawl that occurred after the DEM Party's occupation of the podium. Başarır stated, "A fight broke out here yesterday. Things can be debated, some people come and mediate, but after this fight happened, if one of your MPs, Osman Gökçek, shares a picture of a fist and then makes a low-level post saying, 'all martyrs' and veterans' relatives are thanking me,' well, this is not acceptable. This is not acceptable. Do not allow this. Someone tell this friend, 'This is not Beyaz TV.' Someone tell this friend, 'This is not your father's Twitter page.' Someone tell this friend, 'This is the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.' It is not right to attack our friends who are here after the Assembly session has closed. This has no end. Osman Bey will come here, get behind you, say 'I punched the friends,' and have this shared. Come on Osman, if you saw any of the MPs here on the street, you would run 80 meters away. Keyboard bully. Social media bully," he said.

'I AM AGAINST VIOLENCE'

Osman Gökçek took the floor on the grounds of being targeted and responded to Başarır. Gökçek said, "It is not possible for a man who called the Turkish armed forces a 'sold-out army' and who raids courtrooms like a bandit to teach me manners. I am someone who, having been slapped by his own MP in the corridors, reacted here as an AK Party MP to the MP who slapped him; in other words, I am against violence. Of course, I think that this devoted way of defending the DEM Party is being done as a debt for the support Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu gave to the PKK terrorist organization, especially before the elections. Let me say this specifically, but he is an MP who betrayed Kılıçdaroğlu and was later mocked by his own friends for jumping around," he spoke.

'OSMAN, WE WILL NOT TOUCH YOU, YOU HAVE BECOME SHAMELESS'

Başarır responded to Gökçek by calling him "shameless," saying, "Don't forget that when your father said these things during the years I was doing my job, my chairman made him a doormat. Osman has become shameless; words have no effect on Osman. If I said the things I said to Osman to marble, it would crack, but it has no effect on Osman. Osman, we will not touch you as much as we can because you have become shameless," he replied.

Osman Gökçek said, "I am shameless, you are the ones with shame, but you did not say a word while all elements of the PKK were supporting you. You made Türkan Elçi, who said 'the PKK is not a terrorist organization,' a candidate. You did not say a word despite receiving the support of the PKK terrorist organization," he said.

KONURALP RAN TO THE PODIUM

Following Gökçek's words, CHP Ankara MP Okan Konuralp rose from his seat and ran toward the podium. At this moment, Osman Gökçek shouted at Konuralp, "Come on, come on, intern bully." Meanwhile, ruling and opposition MPs tried to intervene.

Due to the arguments, TBMM Deputy Speaker Gülizar Biçer Karaca adjourned the General Assembly.

ELÇİ: "I FELT REGRET THAT MY NAME WAS MENTIONED"

Taking the floor after the break, CHP's Türkan Elçi said, "I would like to state that I felt regret that my name was mentioned in such a low-level polemic. I am a citizen who knows how the language used here, the negative language, has an adverse effect on society; I am not saying this as an MP, I want to express it as a citizen. The language used here is a language that divides, separates, and alienates society. As someone who knows that we should stay away from these polemics, despite such a traumatic situation, I have never been someone who has uttered a word here that could break a friend's heart or have a bad meaning; I am talking about a period of one year. Let alone one year, let's go back, I am talking about a nine-year trauma, a nine-year murder," she said.
