CHP responds to commission criticisms: 'Where we are...'

The commission to be established in the TBMM as part of the new opening process, dubbed 'Terror-Free Turkey,' will hold its first meeting tomorrow.

While public concerns persist due to experiences from past opening processes, debates regarding the transparency of the current process also continue.

It has been learned that the CHP, which decided to join the commission after its demand for a qualified majority was accepted, is following a cautious strategy regarding both the commission and the process.

According to a report by Cumhuriyet, when asked about public concerns, CHP officials stated, "People have been burned by past experiences. Therefore, we understand everything they say to us. We have no intention of being a tool in an AKP game, approving a constitutional amendment that would make Erdoğan president forever, or allowing the values we founded to be debated."

The officials described their participation in the parliamentary commission by saying, "We are a party that sincerely wants to solve the Kurdish issue. We are the ones who carried out the first studies on the Kurdish issue dating back to the SHP era and who acknowledged the existence of the problem. Furthermore, when the new process began, we were the ones who said, 'Conduct this process transparently in Parliament.' Therefore, we are acting consistently with what we have said from day one and with our historical stance."

'WE WILL NOT ACCEPT A NARROW AGENDA'

While sending a "Trust us" message in response to concerns, CHP officials made the following assessment:

"We do not see this commission solely as a place for the terrorist organization to lay down its arms or for the Kurdish issue to be solved. There are non-compliant Constitutional Court (AYM) and European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings, imprisoned politicians who are not only from the CHP but also from the DEM Party, and municipalities where trustees have been appointed. Many segments of society have expectations for justice. There are those whose lives have been devastated by unsolved murders. There are steps that need to be taken regarding freedom of the press and expression. Social media posts should not be grounds for arrest.

The government should not arrest anyone who makes a comment it dislikes by labeling them a 'terrorist.' There should not be so many lawsuits for insulting the president. The end of the terror problem can only come through democratization. We want many topics like these to be discussed in this commission. We will bring to the agenda the views of martyrs' and veterans' families, the issue of trustees, the imprisonment of our mayors and our presidential candidate, and many other injustices. If these issues are stubbornly avoided, we will not accept it."
