CHP's Başarır reacts to 'MHP and the list': 'If one of these 154 people gets hurt, the government will not be able to account for it'

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır addressed the list of 154 people, which was announced to the public by the MHP and emphasized by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli with the words, "This file is in our hands.

When the day comes, this file will be put into action," stating, "This is profiling, and if one of these 154 people gets hurt, this government, first and foremost, will not be able to account for it."

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır, who questioned why the MHP submitted a list consisting of journalists, academics, legal experts, and politicians to the 32nd High Criminal Court where the Sinan Ateş case is being heard, made the following statements: 

"WHY WERE THESE NAMES SUBMITTED"

"Why was this petition submitted? It is not a criminal complaint, it is not a witness list, so why was it submitted? Were these people profiled? If a party submits a list of 154 people consisting of journalists, intellectuals, and members of parliament to a court; if they are not specified as defendants or suspects there, and they are not witnesses, why were these names submitted? What can that court do? Is that judge Hulusi Kentmen, going to come and pinch my cheeks? This is profiling, and tomorrow will be very difficult for these people. First and foremost, this government will not be able to account for it if one of these 154 people gets hurt!"

"THESE INDIVIDUALS HAVE BEEN TARGETED"

After MHP Group Deputy Chairman Erkan Akçay stated that the incident merely consisted of requesting that those who have documents or information regarding a case submit them to the courts, Başarır expressed the following:

"A petition is being submitted to a high criminal court in an important case. One party must establish standing and request to intervene. But if we are witnesses, we are submitted as witnesses; if we are suspects, we are submitted as suspects. Why was it submitted? As meaningless as it is legally, it is very meaningful according to what Turkey has experienced over the last 22 years. The Chairman (Devlet Bahçeli) can come out and say 'I am filing a complaint against these 154 people,' but if there is a court in between and these petitions are leaked to the press, these individuals have been targeted."

'WHY DO THESE PODIUMS EXIST?'

When MHP's Akçay responded by saying, 'There is no targeting, profiling, or threatening involved. There is a complaint to the public and the conscience of the nation; as the Nationalist Movement Party, we are openly expressing these views and sharing them with the nation,' CHP's Başarır objected. Stating, 'The courts of the Republic of Turkey are not a place for the Nationalist Movement Party to send messages to the public,' Başarır said: 'Why do these podiums exist? If these are being said to send us messages through the Court, this will lead elsewhere.'
