CHP statement on İmamoğlu: Let everyone know, it is playing with fire

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir made statements regarding the current agenda.

Touching upon the discussions on a new constitution, Emir pointed out that "it is meaningless to talk about a new constitution" and made the following assessments:

"Our stance regarding a new constitution is extremely clear and precise. In a process where no rule of the Constitution is followed, it is trampled upon every day, Constitutional Court decisions are violated, and European Court of Human Rights rulings are not complied with, it is meaningless to talk about a new constitution. We will not be a part of such an effort. Turkey needs a more democratic, libertarian, pluralist, and civil constitution, but to do this, it must first be seen that the current Constitution is fully complied with; only then would it be appropriate to start discussing these issues. For now, there is no constitutional amendment work on our agenda. So far, Mr. Kurtulmuş has not requested an appointment with us, but if such a request is made, it will of course be evaluated."

"THEY WILL FACE A HARSH RESPONSE"

Pointing out that the Parliament signed off on legislative proposals that caused reactions in society before entering the summer recess, Emir said, "With the judicial package, they wanted to bring back the obligation for women to carry their husband's surname. In the Commercial Code, they wanted to provide millions of liras in tax advantages to Trendyol. They tried to impose a reactionary, outdated education model on Turkey under the name of the 'Turkey Century Education Model.' They came with a law that sets the teaching profession back under the name of the Teaching Profession Law, turns a deaf ear to the 1 million teachers waiting to be appointed, and designs an academy that will pave the way for new cronyism. They will try to bring these laws from time to time in the coming period, but they will face a harsh response," he said.

"LET EVERYONE KNOW, IT IS PLAYING WITH FIRE"

Evaluating the possibility of a political ban resulting from the appeal case of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, Emir said the following:

"We will never accept such a decision; we consider even the emergence of such a decision a red line. We do not even find it right to comment on it as if a negative decision will be made, because even this would mean, in a way, placing that decision into a logical framework, normalizing it, and in a sense, accepting it. We have strategic plans to implement. But we do not find it right to talk about this today. What should be focused on is that this is a frivolous case. We know that this case is an attempt to push Ekrem İmamoğlu, the strongest of the presidential candidates, out of politics for a while through a political ban. Let everyone know that we will never accept such a decision. It is playing with fire."
