CHP's victory in Elbistan leads to mass resignation in AKP

Fazilet Sevinç, who was appointed to the position by the AKP Headquarters on December 13, 2022, and had served as the AKP Elbistan Women's Branch Chair for approximately one and a half years, announced that she and her board have resigned from their duties.

In her statement, Sevinç said, "As a sign of loyalty to our President, to whom I owe the fact that my heart feels like it will jump out of my chest every time I mention his name, and at the same time, the feeling that I am the strongest and bravest person in the world as a headscarved woman standing tall, we have regretfully decided to resign collectively from my position as the AK Party Elbistan Women's Branch Chair, along with my board of directors."

Sevinç continued her statement with the following remarks:

"We felt the February 6 earthquake to our core. From the very first moment, we worked with a strong team with all our might to heal our wounds in a manner befitting our President. In the general elections, our President's greetings were the key that opened every door.

In the local elections, as the women's branch, we showed maximum effort to ensure the success of our AK Party and especially our President in all our central and rural neighborhoods.

However, reasons such as the district organization management acting alone and without consultation during the election process, the failure to provide even an election office despite requests to coordinate the support coming from women, the taking of stances against past organizations leading to exclusion and causing great resentment, and the disregard for the atmosphere of unity and solidarity in line with the AK Party tradition, prevented our party from being successful in Elbistan once again. We respectfully present our resignation to the public, confident that as the women's branch, we did not engage in a single negative action or behavior throughout these events."

CHP WON AFTER 51 YEARS

In Elbistan, one of the districts heavily devastated by the Kahramanmaraş earthquake, the CHP won for the first time in 51 years as a result of the March 31 local elections. In the district, CHP Mayoral Candidate Erkan Gürbüz surpassed the AKP candidate Murat Mercan with 37 percent of the vote. The CHP last won in Elbistan in the 1973 local elections.
