Confession from police officer who robbed a jewelry store: 'I had debts, I would have committed suicide if I hadn't carried out the robbery'
Cumhur Yılmaz, a 28-year-old police officer arrested on charges of entering a jewelry store in the Fatsa district of Ordu, tying up an employee, and stealing 5 kilograms of gold, has appeared in court for the first time. Claiming he committed the crime to pay off his debts, Yılmaz stated that he had considered committing suicide if he had failed to carry out the robbery.
Police officer Cumhur Yılmaz, who was arrested in connection with a jewelry store robbery that took place on November 25 in the Fatsa district of Ordu, appeared before the Fatsa High Criminal Court. It was stated that Yılmaz, who allegedly neutralized an employee by pointing a gun at them after entering the jewelry store wearing a helmet and stole 170 gold bracelets, was apprehended in Diyarbakır.
APOLOGIZED IN COURT
The detained defendant, Cumhur Yılmaz, began his defense by apologizing to the business owner, Yılmaz Şerbetçi. Claiming that he committed this crime to pay off his debts, Yılmaz said he had reached a dead end due to financial difficulties.
Stating that he had debts of approximately 200-300 million liras, Yılmaz noted that he had tried to pay off his debts by playing online gambling, but the situation had only worsened. Expressing that he received no support from anyone, Yılmaz said that creditors had come to his door and that messages were being sent to his wife. He stated, "I am very regretful. I do not want to lose my wife and child."
"I WOULD HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE IF I HADN'T CARRIED OUT THE ROBBERY"
Defendant Yılmaz claimed that he had no intention of harming anyone during the incident. Stating that there was only one bullet in his gun, Yılmaz expressed that he had considered committing suicide if he had failed to carry out the robbery.
When the presiding judge asked, "As a public official, did what you did make things better?" Yılmaz replied, "No, sir."
COMPLAINANT FILED A COMPLAINT
Upon the presiding judge's question to the business owner, Yılmaz Şerbetçi, "Are you filing a complaint?", Şerbetçi declared that he was filing a complaint against the defendant.
The lawyers for the complainant requested that the defendant not benefit from effective remorse provisions and demanded that he also be punished for the crimes of "deprivation of liberty" and "robbery."
HEARING ADJOURNED
The defendant's lawyer, stating that his client had no prior criminal record, had a family, and had reached this point due to a gambling addiction, requested that his remorse be taken into consideration.
