Counterfeit alcohol continues to claim lives in Istanbul

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül announced that 48 people have lost their lives due to counterfeit alcohol in 2024.

Gül stated, "3,747 operations have been conducted against illegal production and illicit gain. In this context, our inspections in the fight against smuggled and counterfeit alcohol increased in 2024 compared to the previous year. The amount of alcohol seized has more than doubled. As a result of our inspections, instructions have been given for the revocation of licenses for businesses selling smuggled and counterfeit alcohol. Unfortunately, despite all these efforts, 110 of our citizens were poisoned by counterfeit alcohol last year. 48 of them lost their lives."

Gül used the following expressions:

-For this reason, penal actions were applied to 63 businesses. Furthermore, in order to protect our children from harmful habits and to prevent the sale of alcohol and cigarettes to those under the age of 18, we have made it mandatory to install camera systems in places where alcohol, tobacco, and tobacco products are sold. Our goal is to enforce the law.

-In other words, to prevent the sale of alcohol and cigarettes to those under 18 and the sale of alcohol after 22:00. One of our primary goals is to prevent the sale of smuggled alcohol in addition to counterfeit alcohol.
