Critical earthquake warning from Naci Görür for that province! 'If I were the mayor...'
Earth scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, who attended the Earthquake Zone Summit, issued warnings for Gaziantep. Stating, "The main earthquake line for Gaziantep is the East Anatolian boundary fault to its west, and that has broken. It will not pose a threat for a long time," Görür added, "However, there are branches of the Dead Sea Fault that are closer to Gaziantep, and they have become loaded with stress. We do not know when an earthquake will occur."
The Earthquake Zone Summit, organized by the Gaziantep University (GAÜN) Faculty of Engineering, brought together Turkey's leading experts.
Speaking at the summit held at the GAÜN Mavera Congress and Art Center, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made important statements regarding earthquakes. Prof. Dr. Görür stated that Turkey is located on an earthquake belt and that this reality poses a serious risk.
Speaking about the earthquake line where Gaziantep is located, Prof. Dr. Görür said, "The main earthquake line for Gaziantep is the East Anatolian boundary fault to its west, and that has broken. It will not pose a threat for a long time. However, there are branches of the Dead Sea Fault that are closer to Gaziantep, and they have become loaded with stress. We do not know when an earthquake will occur. According to some research, their earthquake recurrence periods are said to be 500 years. But we do not know when the last earthquake occurred on them."

Continuing his speech, Prof. Dr. Görür said, "If I were a mayor, I would first conduct a micro-zoning study of Gaziantep. This means dividing Gaziantep into micro-squares. You will examine the resistance of the rocks and also study its geology. Without examining these and understanding what is there, you cannot make Gaziantep earthquake-resistant. You will find the distribution of shear wave velocity in Gaziantep. You need to know which parts of Gaziantep shake faster and which parts shake less during an earthquake."
Emphasizing the importance of creating earthquake-resistant cities, Prof. Dr. Görür said, "Creating earthquake-resistant cities is important for the safety of people living in regions under earthquake risk and for future generations. However, risks can be minimized when appropriate measures are taken and earthquake-resistant structures are built. We must take earthquake-resistant measures in many areas, from urban planning to infrastructure, and from building construction to emergency response plans."
