Date set for acting mayor election at Buca Municipality

Following the arrest and temporary suspension of CHP member Görkem Duman, who served as the mayor of the Buca district in İzmir, the process for electing an acting mayor for Buca Municipality has been clarified.

In a statement issued by the İzmir Governor's Office, it was announced that the Buca Municipal Council will convene in an extraordinary session on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 16:00 to elect a new acting mayor. The meeting will be held in the council chamber located at the municipality's service building.

The Governor's Office statement included the following:

“Buca Mayor Görkem Duman has been suspended from his duties by the approval of the Ministry of Interior dated June 7, 2026, in accordance with the 4th paragraph of Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law No. 5393. Our Governor's Office has decided, pursuant to Article 45 of the Municipal Law No. 5393, that the Municipal Council shall convene in an extraordinary session on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 16:00 in the Buca Municipality Service Building Council Chamber for the election of an Acting Mayor.”

WHAT HAPPENED?

In an operation conducted as part of an investigation into corruption allegations, 54 people were detained at Buca Municipality and its subsidiaries, 42 of whom were subsequently arrested. Among those arrested is Mayor Görkem Duman. 12 individuals were released under judicial control conditions. The Ministry of Interior had also announced that Duman was temporarily suspended from his duties following the arrest decision.
