Date set for social media regulation: Age verification system is coming

Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş made important statements regarding the social media regulation to be implemented to ensure that children under 15 navigate the digital world more safely. Providing information that the regulation will be completed within 6 months, Göktaş said, "We will not leave our children at the mercy of large companies and digital algorithms."

REGULATION TO BE ISSUED WITHIN 6 MONTHS

Minister Göktaş also touched upon the details of the social media regulation they will implement to increase children's safety in the digital world. Stating, "A regulation will be issued, and when we transition to this regulation within 6 months, our social media regulation in Turkey will have effectively come into force," Göktaş pointed out that this step will be a turning point that will ensure children are safer in the digital environment.

"WE DO NOT KNOW WHO OUR CHILDREN ARE COMMUNICATING WITH"

Minister Göktaş highlighted the dangers children face in the digital environment and said, "Protecting our children is a necessity. We also need to make families a part of the process." Stating that they do not know who children are in contact with in the digital environment, Göktaş announced, "10 percent of our children state that they have been in contact with a stranger at least once."

AGE VERIFICATION SYSTEM IS COMING

Minister Göktaş said that the main purpose of the social media regulation is not to impose bans, but to carry out inspections so that children can continue their presence in the digital environment more safely. "We are implementing an age verification system. Turkey will be one of the pioneering countries in this regard," the Minister said, noting that age-based inspections will be carried out more effectively in children's social media usage.

"OUR GOAL IS TO PREVENT INCIDENTS BEFORE THEY OCCUR"

Minister Göktaş also made statements regarding armed attacks in schools, saying, "We have a social risk map that we have been working on for a long time. Our goal is to protect our children at risk and take precautions." Stating that they have developed both a physical and artificial intelligence-supported prevention model, Göktaş said, "Our goal is to identify risks before any harm comes to our children and to prevent incidents before they occur."

The Minister stated that while shaping Turkey's digital security policies, they will place children at the center and aim to be one of the leading countries in the world in this field. Stating, "This regulation will create a broad security network that will cover not only our children but also their families," she expressed that Turkey will demonstrate a strong stance against the dangers of the digital world.
