Deadlock at the Court of Cassation remains!

Court of Cassation President Mehmet Akarca's 4-year term expired, and in the 21st round of the presidential elections held as a result, no candidate was able to secure an absolute majority.

Mehmet Akarca, who was elected to the position of President of the Court of Cassation on March 24, 2020, completed his 4-year term as of March 24. For this reason, members of the Court of Cassation went to the polls on March 25 to determine the new president of the High Court, who will serve for the next 4 years.

DEADLOCK AT THE COURT OF CASSATION REMAINS: ABSOLUTE MAJORITY CANNOT BE REACHED

Since no candidate was able to receive at least 175 votes—the absolute majority of the 348 Court of Cassation members—in the first 20 rounds of the election, the 21st round of voting was held today.

As a result of the voting, Mehmet Akarca received 100 votes, 3rd Civil Chamber President Ömer Kerkez received 96 votes, and 3rd Penal Chamber President Muhsin Şentürk received 112 votes. While participation in the election was recorded as 324, 2 blank votes were cast and 14 votes were deemed invalid.

Due to the failure to reach an absolute majority, the election will continue with the 22nd round of voting.

An absolute majority of the total number of members is required to be present for the elections.
