Death toll from earthquakes in Japan rises to 206

A statement from the Ishikawa Prefectural Government reported that the number of people who lost their lives in the numerous earthquakes that occurred in the first week of January has risen to 206.

The statement noted that across the prefecture, where more than 28 thousand people are staying in evacuation centers, 3 thousand 100 people remain stranded due to closed roads.

While formal education resumed across the country on January 9 following the two-week break and yesterday's January 8 "Coming of Age Day" (Seijin no Hi) public holiday, classes could not begin in more than 80 schools in Ishikawa.

It was noted that the schools where classes could not resume were damaged in the earthquakes.

It was reported that the number of people whose whereabouts are unknown across the Noto Peninsula is 102, and the number of those receiving treatment for various levels of injuries is 565.

The cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio approved the allocation of 4.7 billion yen (33 million dollars) in funding from the 2023 fiscal year reserve funds for the restoration of the region.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), numerous earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 5 to 7 occurred on the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa and off its coast between January 1 and 5.
