Death toll from earthquakes in Japan rises to 241

The Ishikawa Prefectural Government announced that the number of people who died in the series of earthquakes that occurred in the first week of January has risen to 241.

The statement shared that more than 13,000 people are still staying in evacuation centers, and search efforts are ongoing for 11 people who remain missing.

It was reported that across the prefecture, where the number of partially damaged and completely destroyed buildings has reached 65,000, more than 31,000 homes are experiencing water outages, and over 1,500 homes are without electricity.

The central government had previously announced that it would provide 6 million yen (41,000 dollars) in support per household for families whose heads of household are above a certain age, as part of reconstruction projects.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), numerous earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 5 to 7 occurred on the Noto Peninsula and off the coast of Ishikawa between January 1 and 5.
