Deaths caused by counterfeit alcohol brought to the agenda of the Turkish Parliament
With the approach of the New Year and increasing SCT hikes, the number of people losing their lives due to counterfeit alcohol is rising day by day. The deaths caused by counterfeit alcohol have been brought to the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM). CHP Aydın Deputy Evrim Karakoz has submitted a parliamentary question regarding the deaths caused by counterfeit alcohol in Aydın.
On one hand, the approaching New Year celebrations, and on the other, the successive SCT hikes announced throughout the year, have caused the production of counterfeit alcohol to continue at full speed. The increase in the number of people dying from consuming counterfeit alcohol has also been brought to the agenda of the TBMM. CHP Aydın Deputy Evrim Karakoz submitted a parliamentary question on the subject and called for increased inspections.
Drawing attention to the hikes in alcoholic products, Karakoz stated, "High increases in alcohol prices have led to increases in the production and consumption of illicit alcohol. Unregistered production, that is, unregulated 'under-the-counter' production, has increased. As a result, our citizens are experiencing health problems and losing their lives due to the consumption of counterfeit alcohol," he said.
Karakoz used the following expressions:
"Although an impression is created that inspections are being increased after every news report of counterfeit alcohol deaths, our citizens are knowingly walking toward death due to the government's policies that insist on interfering with lifestyles. The AKP must review the policies it implements as soon as possible and take the necessary measures against counterfeit alcohol."
Karakoz directed the following questions to be answered by Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya:
"How many of our citizens have lost their lives due to counterfeit alcohol in Aydın in the last 5 years? What is the distribution by year?
How many of our citizens in Aydın applied to the hospital with suspicion of counterfeit alcohol in 2024, how many of them lost their lives, and how many were treated?
How many operations were carried out against counterfeit alcohol in Aydın in 2024?
How many bottles and how many liters of counterfeit alcohol were seized in these operations?
How many of our citizens have lost their lives due to counterfeit alcohol across Turkey in the last 10 years? What is the distribution by year?
How frequently are inspections carried out to prevent counterfeit alcohol?"
