Definitive cause of death for Ece Gürel determined
The investigation into the death of Ece Gürel, who was searched for as a missing person for days in Istanbul's Belgrade Forest and found on the verge of freezing, has concluded. Examinations determined that Gürel lost her life due to health complications resulting from hypothermia.
36-year-old landscape architect Ece Gürel went missing in the Belgrade Forest, where she had gone for a nature hike on March 2, 2025, and was found in critical condition following a four-day search and rescue operation. Despite all medical interventions, the young woman could not be saved after being taken to the hospital.
According to a report by Sabah, the prosecutor's office, having completed the investigation, evaluated comprehensive research and forensic medical reports, stating that no evidence of a crime was found. The final report indicated that Ece Gürel's death was caused by hypothermia, which developed after she remained stranded in severe cold for an extended period, and subsequent complications such as acute kidney failure. Furthermore, it was stated that while traces of several pharmaceutical active ingredients were found in samples taken from her body, the amounts were not lethal, and no medical findings pointing to any other cause were reached.
Technical examinations and camera footage confirmed that Gürel entered the forest alone, revealing that no other person was with her at the time of the incident. The forensic report also noted that no DNA samples belonging to anyone else or any findings related to the male gender were detected.
NON-PROSECUTION DECISION ON MOBBING AND CRIMINAL ALLEGATIONS
Following the incident, Ece Gürel's family had alleged that the young architect was subjected to pressure and mobbing at the law firm where she worked and had filed a criminal complaint against the firm's officials. However, the investigation conducted by the prosecutor's office found no concrete evidence that the individuals complained about had engaged in acts such as insults, threats, or harassment against Gürel. The decision stated that the alleged mobbing claims could not be evaluated within the scope of criminal law, emphasizing that such claims could be subject to material compensation within the framework of labor law, and announced that the file had been closed.
The investigation confirmed that there was no suspect or third party involved in Ece Gürel's death. Thus, no evidence of negligence or external factors was recorded in the tragic event.
