Criticism of Mahir Polat case from DEM Party Co-Chair Hatimoğulları: 'It wasn't enough that he was arrested while innocent'

Hatimoğulları made statements regarding Polat's health condition via her social media account. 

Tülay Hatimoğulları criticized the fact that Polat, who suffers from several illnesses and recently underwent an angiogram, continues to be held in prison despite all medical reports confirming his condition.

In her statement, Hatimoğulları also drew attention to sick prisoners in jails, noting that approximately 100 sick inmates have lost their lives in the last two years. She emphasized that Turkey ranks high globally in terms of the number of sick prisoners and deaths in its prisons. "Mahir Polat was already arrested while innocent. That wasn't enough; now he is being made to pay a price through his illness," she stated.

DEM Party Co-Chair Hatimoğulları stated that the government must stop "turning prisons into death houses for dissidents" and called for the release of critically ill prisoners in particular. At the end of her statement, Hatimoğulları added, "All political prisoners must be released immediately. Their rights to health and treatment must be ensured."

WHAT HAPPENED?

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is also the President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey (TBB) and the CHP's presidential primary candidate, was detained on March 19 as part of a 'terrorism' and 'corruption' investigation into the İBB, and was arrested on March 23. İmamoğlu was arrested and taken to Silivri Prison on allegations of "rigging tenders, recording personal data, bribery, and establishing an organization" as part of the "corruption" investigation into the İBB. Following his arrest, he was removed from his post as İBB Mayor by a decision of the Ministry of Interior.
