The appointment made by Kadıköy Mayor Mesut Kösedağı, who was elected in the March 31, 2024 local elections, to the position of deputy mayor has become a topic of discussion on social media.

Criticism arose regarding the appointment of Sözcü newspaper columnist Deniz Zeyrek's brother, Ediz Zeyrek, as a Deputy Mayor of Kadıköy.

In particular, Deniz Zeyrek was reminded of his writings on 'merit' and was asked for his reaction.

Türkiye newspaper columnist Cem Küçük expressed his reaction on social media regarding the appointment of Deniz Zeyrek's brother, Ediz Zeyrek, as deputy mayor, saying, "If this were the brother of a writer who supports the government, what wouldn't they write?"

DENIZ ZEYREK RESPONDS

Journalist Deniz Zeyrek reacted to the news reports and criticisms made about him following his brother's appointment via his social media account. Zeyrek wrote the following:

Dear troll ladies and gentlemen, this time you have attacked me through my brother.

I did not want to get into this stale topic, but since some of my colleagues have also joined in, it became necessary to respond.

1- I am also against my brother being a politician. If he asked for my opinion, I would tell him "don't do it."

2- He has been active in politics for a quarter of a century in the party where our grandfather was also a convention delegate since the 70s (in 2009, when no one knew of the existence of a journalist named Deniz Zeyrek, he was already a member of the Esenyurt Municipal Council).

3- As one of the people who knows municipal legislation and finance best in Turkey (and also as someone who has earned the title of Certified Public Accountant by passing difficult exams), I do not think he needs my support to come to a municipal council membership or a district deputy mayoral position.
