Details of the new judicial package emerge: Prison sentences instead of fines for these crimes!
The details of the new judicial package prepared by the AKP government have been reached. Accordingly, some crimes currently classified as minor offenses will be included in the scope of catalog crimes.
Rising incidents of violence in Turkey have brought a 'trust' problem to the fore, while the fact that individuals with dozens of criminal records can walk the streets freely and continue to commit crimes has created a perception of 'impunity' in society.
Work continues on the judicial package, which the AKP says aims to eliminate the perception of impunity.
It has been learned that the new judicial package plans to reclassify illegal gambling as a crime rather than a misdemeanor.
According to a report by the Türkiye newspaper, known for its proximity to the government, the package not only redefines the conditions for probation and good conduct but also envisions increasing the penalties for certain crimes currently defined as minor.
MINOR CRIMES TO BE INCLUDED IN 'CATALOG'
Detention measures are on the agenda, with assessments to be made regarding the disruption of public order, the manner in which the crime is committed, and the individual's propensity to commit crimes. Since there is no detention for crimes with sentences under two years, offenders currently benefit from probation without ever entering prison.
With the new regulations, it is planned to include some crimes currently classified as 'minor offenses' in the scope of 'catalog crimes.' Thus, every crime will necessarily have a certain amount of 'actual prison time,' and probation conditions will only be applied after a period of incarceration.
The new Judicial Package envisions more serious penalties for actions such as weaving through traffic, drifting, and behaviors that disrupt public order. The implementation of prison sentences instead of fines for these crimes is being discussed. Additionally, penalties for those who fire guns into the air at events such as weddings and military send-offs will also be increased. While current law generally does not include prison sentences for such crimes, the new regulation will ensure that offenders spend a certain portion of their sentences in prison.
