Details of the 'Political Ethics Law' mentioned by Özgür Özel have emerged! What is in the proposal?

Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel reminded the public of the Political Ethics Law waiting in Parliament during his party's group meeting.

The details regarding the "Political Ethics Law" pointed to by Özel, who issued a call by saying, "I challenge you, bring it forward and let's make it law," have emerged.

According to the report by Cumhuriyet, the proposal, which has been waiting in the Constitutional Commission since July 2023, suggests the creation of a Political Ethics Board where every party provides an equal number of members.

The board is granted the authority to examine the asset and income declarations of the president, ministers, and members of parliament. Furthermore, the proposal states that citizens who possess concrete evidence regarding an action contrary to political ethics principles may also apply to the board.

According to the ethical rules outlined in the proposal bearing Özgür Özel's signature, the president, ministers, and members of parliament cannot serve on the boards of directors of public institutions, associations, or foundations as long as their terms continue. They cannot hold any position in the private sector, even if there is no financial gain involved.

The proposal states that politicians cannot use national and spiritual values, which are the common heritage of society, for political purposes, and that public resources allocated to them "cannot be used for purposes other than those for which they were allocated."

The proposal also stipulates, in accordance with the Anti-Corruption Law, that the president, members of parliament, and ministers are required to declare their assets to Parliament every January.
