Dissenting voices rise in AKP: Erdoğan issues directive as complaints increase

Intense complaints from citizens regarding new traffic fines are now on the political agenda. The rising fine amounts were first discussed at an AKP strategy meeting. Subsequently, the issue was evaluated in detail during the Presidential Cabinet meeting.

According to a report by the pro-government Türkiye Gazetesi, AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan requested that the new regulation not create grievances in society as a result of the evaluations, and issued instructions to the relevant units to review the regulations.

The regulation regarding traffic fines is aimed to be completed by the end of April.

DISSENTING VOICES IN AKP

Different views regarding the impact of the increases in traffic fines are drawing attention within the party. Some party members point out that high monetary fines have caused public outrage, noting that it is difficult for citizens to cover these costs, especially due to economic conditions. On the other hand, other figures within the party emphasize the importance of deterrent penalties, particularly for dangerous driving, driving under the influence, and using a mobile phone while driving.

Meanwhile, some party strategists warn that increasing fines alone is not a solution and caution that exorbitant hikes could receive a negative response in the field.
