"U.S. Citizens: What to do during an earthquake?
If you are indoors during an earthquake:
Stay inside unless you are absolutely certain that it is safe to go outside.
DROP: Get down on your hands and knees to prevent falling.
COVER: Protect your head and neck with your arms.
If possible, get under a sturdy table.
HOLD ON: If you have taken cover under sturdy furniture, hold onto one side of it and be prepared to move with the furniture.
Move as little as possible to avoid injury.
Avoid using elevators.
If you smell gas, leave the area immediately.
If you are outdoors during an earthquake:
Move to an open area away from buildings, power lines, trees, and streetlights.
If you are driving, pull over to a safe location and avoid overpasses and bridges.
Be prepared for aftershocks – DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON during every aftershock.
Follow the instructions issued by local authorities.
Roads may be unusable, which could make access to airports difficult.
Be prepared to shelter in a secure location for several days.
Obtain travel insurance to cover unexpected expenses.
