Earthquake warning for 3 provinces from Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş has made assessments regarding the earthquake danger for Ordu, Trabzon, and Rize in the Black Sea Region. Bektaş stated that the risk in the region is not limited to active fault lines and that soil characteristics could also amplify seismic waves, increasing the impact of the tremors.

SOILS IN COASTAL AREAS MAY AMPLIFY EFFECTS

Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş stated that the soil structure in the region could increase the level at which earthquake waves are felt and made the following assessment:

"Earthquakes occurring on the East Anatolian Fault. Soil effect: Seismic waves, especially low-frequency (long-period) ones coming from these earthquake sources, can be amplified in alluvial and fill soils in coastal areas and felt with higher intensity."

DREW ATTENTION TO DANGERS THAT MAY ARISE AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE

Bektaş also issued warnings regarding secondary disasters that may arise after an earthquake, using the following expressions:

"Result: Triggering of landslides on slopes, development of settlement and lateral spreading in fill areas, increased risk of liquefaction in loose and water-saturated soils.

Summary: The earthquake danger for ORDU-TRABZON-RİZE is not only from nearby faults"

REMINDED OF AFAD'S PREDICTIONS

In the continuation of his statement, Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş pointed to AFAD's projections for the region and made the following assessment:

"It is also shaped by the amplification of long-period waves coming from distant large fault systems in coastal fills and weak soils. For this reason, AFAD has predicted an intensity of 0.2-0.3 g or a maximum earthquake magnitude of 6.6 on the coast, within solid ground, and in semi-hard terrain."
