Ekrem İmamoğlu reacts to trustee appointments: Usurpation and violation

Ekrem İmamoğlu reacts to trustee appointments: Usurpation and violation

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently in Germany for a series of meetings, reacted to the newly appointed trustees on his social media account.

Stating that the decision taken is not legal, İmamoğlu expressed his reaction with the following words:

"In municipalities, the will of the people is embodied in the Council Members just as it is in the Mayor. This evening, the provincial governor was appointed as a trustee to the Tunceli Municipality, and the district governor was appointed as a trustee to our Ovacık Municipality.

The practice of appointing trustees without a final judicial decision is not legal.

In any case, if a mayor is to be removed from office, the correct procedure is for a new mayor to be elected by the municipal council.

The current practice is a usurpation of the national will and a violation of the right to vote and be elected.

It should not be forgotten that: 'Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation.'"
