Ekrem İmamoğlu's reaction to İzmir and the indictment: The prosecutor did their job there
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu shared a notable message on his social media account.
İmamoğlu shared the following message on his social media account: "Look, a different example is being experienced in İzmir. I say this independently of the allegations; the prosecutor there did their job. They completed the investigation quickly, did not delay the indictment, and did not resort to secret witness games. Now the trial will begin, and I say with conviction that it will emerge that our friends are innocent."
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently imprisoned, shared a notable message on his social media account.
İmamoğlu wrote the following:
"First, slanders were fabricated using secret witnesses. With those slanders, and without a single piece of concrete evidence, my colleagues and I were put in prison.
Then, again without any basis in evidence, our appeals against our detention were rejected. A chain of lawlessness was carried out against us, just as it was during the Ergenekon era. People whose only 'crime' was being in my circle were arrested. They were and are being threatened with their families, their jobs, and their health.
The investigation process was prolonged not like a trial, but with the direct aim of punishment. It turned into a system organized almost to torture people.
However, the law is something else. Look, a different example is being experienced in İzmir. I say this independently of the allegations; the prosecutor there did their job. They completed the investigation quickly, did not delay the indictment, and did not resort to secret witness games. Now the trial will begin, and I say with conviction that it will emerge that our friends are innocent.
We demand justice not only for ourselves but for everyone. We have never shied away from being tried or held accountable; we will not shy away today either. But we cannot consent to the judiciary turning into a political weapon, being used to shape elections, judges and prosecutors acting like civil servants of the ruling power, or people being declared guilty before they even appear in court. Because this is not justice; it is a regime of oppression that presents punishment as if it were a judicial process. We will not bow to this order. The truth will emerge sooner or later, and justice will surely prevail."
