Support for IMM Case Defendant Türker from EP Turkey Rapporteur Amor: 'They will not be able to extinguish this light'

European Parliament (EP) Turkey Rapporteur Nacho Sánchez Amor issued a written statement following the testimony of Fatoş Pınar Türker, General Manager of Medya A.Ş., who is being tried while in custody as part of the case against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM). Reacting to the mistreatment Türker claims to have been subjected to, Amor stated, "Those who abuse power will not be able to extinguish the light that Pınar Türker represents."

"STRIP SEARCH AND THREATS INVOLVING CHILDREN" ALLEGATIONS ON THE AGENDA

Appearing before the court at the latest hearing of the IMM case, Medya A.Ş. General Manager Fatoş Pınar Türker recounted her experiences during the detention and trial process to the court panel. Türker alleged that she was subjected to an attempted strip search by police officers during her detention, and that she was threatened by the investigating prosecutor that she would "never see her children again" if she did not provide the statement demanded of her. Türker also shared details regarding prison conditions and psychological pressure.

Following Türker's statements in court, EP Turkey Rapporteur Nacho Sánchez Amor made a statement via his social media account, noting that the allegations raised had deeply affected him. Praising the stance Türker displayed, Amor used the following expressions:

“She represents the Turkey I admire and love: Independent, courageous, and standing on her own merits... This woman, a mother of two with a brilliant career, defended herself with impressive dignity and determination in court, despite having spent 15 months of her life in this ordeal.”

"TURKEY IS STILL WORTH FIGHTING FOR"

Criticizing those responsible for the process, Amor argued that a segment abusing power is humiliating innocent people and applying cruel mistreatment. Amor concluded his statement with these words:

"This segment, represented by those who abuse power to humiliate innocent people and treat them with cruel mistreatment, has stooped as low as using her daughters to threaten Fatoş. That ugly face of Turkey may be rising, but it will never be able to extinguish the light represented by people like Fatoş, the light of the Turkish people who truly defend Republican values. Turkey is still worth fighting for.”
