The opening speech of the rally was delivered by New Welfare Party Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayoral Candidate Mehmet Altınöz.

Our nation is tired of a municipal understanding that cares about the brand and model of its car instead of the people's troubles, that sinks municipalities into debt and interest, that is corrupt, that has allowed illicit gains into municipal affairs, that practices nepotism and favoritism; they are running to our party.

Our nation is also tired of statue-focused municipalism. We need to save Istanbul from this statue-focused mentality. What has this statue-focused municipalism done for 5 years? Today, the IMM (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality) is the institution that borrows dollars with the highest interest rate in the world. They said, 'Transportation in Istanbul will drop to symbolic fees,' but there is no transport fare they haven't hiked. They also failed at urban transformation.

"45 PERCENT OF THE PUBLIC IS BELOW THE HUNGER LINE, 85 PERCENT BELOW THE POVERTY LINE"

You know the difficulties we are experiencing with the economic crisis. The pension is 10 thousand liras, the minimum wage is 17 thousand liras. For a family of 5 with 3 children, the cost has risen to 65 thousand liras. How many people have an income of 65 thousand liras per month? By this calculation, 45 percent of the public is below the hunger line, and 85 percent is below the poverty line.
