Erdoğan's May Day message in the shadow of police intervention and mass detentions
Police intervened harshly against crowds attempting to march to Taksim Square, with more than 500 people detained on May Day, the Day of Labor and Solidarity. Despite the events, President Erdoğan celebrated the workers' day on social media.
In Istanbul, groups attempting to march to Taksim for the May Day Day of Labor and Solidarity were met with police blockades. While all roads leading to Taksim Square were closed off with security barricades, dozens of citizens were detained starting from the early morning hours, particularly in the vicinity of Mecidiyeköy.
Police implemented intense security measures on many streets and avenues across the city, causing disruptions in transportation. While alternative routes were announced, labor and democratic mass organizations were directed to hold their celebrations in alternative areas such as Kadıköy and Kartal. Later in the day, interventions also took place against members of the HKP, the Revolutionary Party, and the Workers' Student Union, as well as groups of lawyers. The Progressive Lawyers Association announced that the number of detainees was approaching 550.
ERDOĞAN'S MAY DAY MESSAGE
While all these developments were unfolding, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan shared a May Day message on the social media platform X. Erdoğan stated, "I congratulate all our worker brothers and sisters who earn their living through their labor and produce added value for their country and nation on the May Day Day of Labor and Solidarity, and I send my greetings and love to all our workers, employers, and employees across the four corners of our country."
While the interventions and detentions that continued throughout the day caused a major stir in public opinion, labor and trade organizations reacted to the events. Thousands of posts were also made on social media with the hashtags #1Mayıs and #Taksim.
