European Union to reopen its delegation in Damascus
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has announced that the EU embassy in Damascus will be reopened to engage with the new leadership and civil society in Syria.
The European Union (EU) is reviving its diplomatic activities in Syria. High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced that the EU delegation in Damascus will be reopened.
In her speech at the European Parliament session on the Syrian crisis, Kallas stated that they have begun a process of cautious engagement with the new leadership and civil society in Syria.
'WE ARE READY TO RESUME OPERATIONS'
"We are ready to resume operations at the EU embassy in Damascus," said Kallas, noting that a high-level delegation from the EU mission was sent to Damascus yesterday (December 16). Kallas explained that the delegation had been moved to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, due to the civil war, but that they now wish to re-establish a presence in Syria.
