Expected earthquake statement arrives from Prof. Dr. Naci Görür: 'I don't see a problem right now, but'
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Gulf of Gemlik, Bursa! The earthquake was felt in Istanbul, Bilecik, Yalova, and surrounding provinces. A statement regarding the matter came from renowned seismologist and Science Academy member Prof. Dr. Naci Görür.
Renowned seismologist and Science Academy member Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made statements following the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Gulf of Gemlik, Bursa.
"THE LOCATION OF THIS CITY OF OURS IS VERY DANGEROUS"
Görür said the following in a post on his social media account:
"Friends, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred slightly offshore from Kumyaka, Mudanya, Bursa. This earthquake has clearly alarmed many people. The earthquake is likely on the part of the Zeytinbağı Fault within the Gulf of Gemlik. This fault is a part of the southern branch of the North Anatolian Fault (NAF). The southern branch is a fault zone that moves slowly but accumulates stress. I suspect it underwent stress relief during the 1999 earthquakes. We are now expecting an earthquake on the northern branch. I don't see a problem right now, but measures must be taken in Gemlik to make this settlement area earthquake-resistant. The location of this city of ours is very dangerous and is directly on the Gemlik fault. Get well soon."
