Experts warn: Record temperatures may be coming
The development of El Niño in the Pacific Ocean could bring record temperatures in 2027. Scientists warn that the El Niño, which has the potential to form this year, could accelerate climate changes worldwide.
A new concern has been added to the growing worries regarding global warming and climate change. El Niño, which is expected to form in the Pacific Ocean, has come to the fore with the risk of pushing global temperatures to new record levels in 2027. Weather and climate experts point out that if El Niño forms in 2026, it could lead to temperature records in 2027.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology have announced that some climate models point to El Niño. However, both institutions stated that these forecasts are uncertain and that it is too early to predict whether El Niño will definitely occur. Climate scientists state that sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean are giving signals that could lead to El Niño.
El Niño is defined by the accumulation of warm water in the eastern equatorial Pacific, extending to the coasts of the Americas. While this situation raises global temperatures, it is particularly associated with drought and extreme heat in Australia. Experts predict that El Niño could be effective during Australia's summer months.
Monash University climate scientist Dr. Andrew Watkins stated that a large amount of warm water has accumulated in the western tropical Pacific and that El Niño could strengthen as these waters move eastward. However, Watkins emphasized that more data is needed before this can be confirmed.
TEMPERATURE RECORD COULD BE BROKEN IN 2027
Dr. Zeke Hausfather from the Berkeley Earth research group said that the El Niño that began in mid-2023 and ended in April 2024 would increase global temperatures in 2024 by 0.12 degrees. Hausfather stated that if El Niño begins in 2026, significant increases in global surface temperatures would be observed in 2027, and 2027 could break a new temperature record.
