Experts warn: Winter will be harsh
According to meteorology experts, October and November will pass within seasonal norms, and the drought will end in December. There is a high probability of cold air waves and snowfall in January and February. A heatwave is arriving this weekend.
Turkey will feel the effects of La Niña, which is developing in the Pacific Ocean, during the autumn and winter months. Reports from international climate institutions reveal that this effect will alter atmospheric circulation and determine winter conditions.
Meteorological Engineer Adil Tek stated, "We have transitioned to La Niña conditions as of June. It is expected to continue at a weak or moderate intensity until January 2026." Dr. Güven Özdemir, a faculty member at Istanbul Aydın University, added, "Model studies show that La Niña will strengthen in some phases and weaken in others."
DROUGHT WILL END IN DECEMBER
While Adil Tek noted that the autumn months of October and November will pass within seasonal norms, he said that the drought will end in December with above-average precipitation.
Dr. Güven Özdemir warned, "The risk of drought is high from the second half of autumn. Average temperatures will hover slightly above seasonal norms."
VORTEX WARNING: WINTER MAY BE HARSHER
Drawing attention to developments in the polar region, Adil Tek said, "There are expectations that the vortex will break down this year. If this happens, winter could be harsher."
HEATWAVE ARRIVING THIS WEEKEND
Issuing a warning for the weekend, Tek noted that temperatures in Istanbul will reach 32 degrees on Sunday, that the northeasterly wind (poyraz) will be effective in the Marmara region, and that no precipitation is expected until September 14-15.
