Fake identities stretching from MIT to NATO: Indictment prepared for 'thousand-faced' Şerife

The Public Prosecutor's Office has prepared an indictment against Şerife Yılmaz, who is alleged to have caused financial loss to numerous people in Ankara by posing as a high-level official from important state institutions using various fake identities. The documents include complaints that Yılmaz defrauded people by claiming to be a member of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT), a diplomat, or sometimes a representative of NATO or the United Nations (UN).

Within the scope of the investigation, it was stated that Yılmaz prepared fake official documents and usually made contact with victims in public areas, particularly at a cafe in Ankara. It was reported that the suspect introduced herself as a diplomat to one of the victims, Ö.G., and claimed she could expedite a process at the Ministry of National Defense (MSB). The indictment includes the allegation that a large sum of money was taken on two separate occasions under the pretext of expediting the process, but the transactions never took place.

Following the incident, Ö.G. stated that as a result of his research, he learned that Şerife Yılmaz had defrauded many people in a similar manner by claiming to be a MIT member or a high-level state official. The victim alleged that when he asked for his money back, Yılmaz tried to threaten him with deterrent statements. He said, "I still haven't been able to get my money back from her."

In her statement to the prosecutor's office, Yılmaz claimed that she knew the victims, that she had taken the money as a loan, that she had not made any promises in return, and that she had never introduced herself as a public official or diplomat.

Examinations conducted after seizing the suspect's phone and digital materials revealed a fake "Republic of Turkey State Medal of Honor Certificate" issued in the name of Şerife Yılmaz, as well as fake title deed documents. Additionally, messages were uncovered in Yılmaz's WhatsApp conversations in which she presented herself as a fully authorized diplomat on matters concerning MIT, the UN, NATO, and the EU.

Authorities determined that similar complaints against Yılmaz had appeared in UYAP records in the past and that she had carried out her fraud method systematically. The assessment in the file emphasized that the evidence was sufficient to indicate that the crime had been committed, despite the suspect's denial.

The indictment requests up to 10 years in prison for Şerife Yılmaz for the crime of "qualified fraud." The judicial process will begin in the coming days.
