Fatih Altaylı mocks Murat Kurum's election promise: 'Tell a lie, and those who believe will love it'

Murat Kurum, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) mayoral candidate for the People's Alliance, formed by the AKP and MHP, has announced his promises for the local elections.

One of Kurum's most notable promises was the pledge to build 650,000 housing units.

IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu commented on Kurum's promise, calling it "completely aimed at deceiving the nation, and hollow."

Journalist Fatih Altaylı, in his article titled "Tell a lie, and those who believe will love it," mocked Kurum's 650,000 housing promise.

Pointing to the economic crisis, Altaylı commented, "While we are experiencing the most brutal economic crisis in the history of the Republic, he will increase the speed of housing production fivefold. Tell a lie, and those who believe will love it."

Altaylı included the following statements in his article:

"The total number of housing units that the AK Party has built, commissioned, or mediated the construction of through TOKİ and Emlak Konut during its 21-year tenure is 1 million 170 thousand. In other words, if you don't count the first year, TOKİ under AKP administration has built an average of 58 thousand houses per year over 20 years.

How was a system that produced 58 thousand houses per year in its best years going to build 175 thousand houses per year for 4 years? To be frank, it is not a small amount, but the promise made was very exaggerated; it was close to impossible.

And now, a promise of 650 thousand houses in 5 years has been made in Istanbul. This means the total amount to be delivered in 5 years has risen to 1 million 469 thousand. If we consider that 45 thousand of these were delivered as earthquake housing, the amount that needs to be delivered is 1 million 424 thousand houses. The AKP, which has built and delivered an average of 58 thousand houses per year over 21 years, will now build 285 thousand houses per year, and will build 130 thousand of these in Istanbul annually. In other words, a miracle will happen, and while the economy is in this state, while we are experiencing the most brutal economic crisis in the history of the Republic of Turkey, it will increase the speed of housing production fivefold.

Yes, the number 98 thousand given by Ekrem İmamoğlu is not correct, but the promises made by the government are not correct at all, not at all."
