Striking comment from Fatih Altaylı on AKP member Şebnem Bursalı's viral lobster post: 'What I'm curious about is what wine they drank with it'

AKP İzmir MP and member of the Digital Media Commission Şebnem Bursalı shared a photo of the lobster she ate at the Monaco Yacht Club on her personal social media account.

While citizens are struggling with the cost of living, this post by the AKP deputy drew a flood of reactions from the opposition front.

CHP Istanbul MP Oğuz Kaan Salıcı said, "While young people cannot afford to eat fish and bread in Eminönü, AKP MP Şebnem Bursalı's lobster feast at the Monaco Yacht Club is a class issue, posting it as a story is vulgarity, and it is the summary of AKP arrogance."

Another reaction to Bursalı's post came from journalist Fatih Altaylı.

Altaylı made the following assessment:

"Now you might say, 'Is it shameful to eat lobster?' Of course not. You, I, we all can eat it.

Even Şebnem Bursalı can. But for a member of parliament, and an ruling party MP at that, to eat this on the terrace of Europe's fanciest yacht club while the nation struggles with an economic crisis and millions live at the hunger threshold, and to display it on social media as if rubbing it in the nation's face, is shameful.

It is a classic case of 'If they can't afford bread, let them eat brioche.' It is a sign that the ruling party's magic has faded, its paint is peeling, and its polish is gone. When the nation is full, you can eat whatever you want; no one will care. But if you eat this while the nation is hungry, you will be buried at the ballot box. What I am still curious about is what wine they drank with it.

After all, you can't eat lobster like that dry. Especially on the terrace with the magnificent view of the YCM.

NOTE: I have no doubt that the trolls will now use a photo I shared on my social media years ago of me cooking lobster. Of course, they will never say to Şebnem Bursalı what they said to me about that photo, but I am not an MP for a party that pretends to be populist and Islamist. More importantly, the lobster I bought for a pittance from a fisherman at the Capbreton pier and cooked at home is not the same thing as eating a lobster cooked by a 3-Michelin-starred chef at one of the world's most prestigious yacht clubs, on the terrace of the YCM's new building overlooking Port Hercules."
