Fatih Altaylı's commentary on Selahattin and Başak Demirtaş: 'He is winking at political Islamists'

Journalist Fatih Altaylı commented on the claims that Başak Demirtaş, the wife of former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, would be a candidate in Istanbul.

"NEGOTIATIONS REGARDING HIS LEGAL FUTURE MAY BE INVOLVED"

Altaylı stated, "For the first time in his political life, Selahattin Demirtaş has begun to use rhetoric that would please political Islamists. He is winking at political Islamists. There may also be some negotiations regarding Demirtaş's legal future involved in Başak Hanım's candidacy."

"IF BAŞAK HANIM BECOMES A CANDIDATE..."

"There is nothing more normal than a woman wanting to support her husband. Başak Hanım may also have a desire to be a political figure. There can be no obstacle to this," said Altaylı, continuing as follows:

"This is actually part of something else. There are two things that bother the AKP. One is the HDP or DEM Party voters casting their ballots for the CHP candidate. We don't know the 7-8-9-10 situation; it is something that changes the balance of the election. The second is the New Welfare Party (Yeniden Refah Partisi).

Because the AKP has already taken the IYI Party out of the equation. The IYI Party is no longer on the side of the CHP. Yes, a portion of the IYI Party's vote in Istanbul will go to Ekrem İmamoğlu through a grassroots consensus, but the same will not happen with the DEM Party. However, 70-80 percent of it will go to the DEM Party.

If Başak Hanım becomes a candidate, there is a possibility of receiving a bit more of the vote.

Öcalan will act in concert with the AKP, but we do not yet know how much Kandil will comply with this, or whether there will be a consensus on the Demirtaş name. We do not know if Kandil will support the Demirtaş surname. Başak Demirtaş's move shows that developments the government wants are likely to occur."
