Following the alarming earthquake in Malatya, a warning also came from Prof. Dr. Semih Ergintav

While the wounds from the February 6 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes have not yet fully healed, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in Malatya today. While there was no loss of life in the earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, statements have come one after another from seismologists and professors.

Prof. Dr. Semih Ergintav, a member of the Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, said regarding the 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Malatya's Kale district: "The region where the earthquake occurred is quite complex, a zone where many fault lines are intertwined. Therefore, we are currently trying to understand whether it is related to the fault zone or to internal segments. In fact, we are still seeing the effects of the mobilization caused by the Kahramanmaraş earthquake throughout the entire region."

In his statement to an AA reporter, Prof. Dr. Ergintav said that the tremor that occurred in Malatya was close to a fault line that did not break during the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes on February 6, 2023.

Stating that they are trying to understand whether the earthquake is related to the unbroken fault line, Ergintav continued as follows:

"The region where the earthquake occurred is quite complex, a zone where many fault lines are intertwined. Therefore, we are currently trying to understand whether it is related to the fault zone or to internal segments. In fact, we are still seeing the effects of the mobilization caused by the Kahramanmaraş earthquake throughout the entire region. For this reason, these types of earthquakes are not very surprising to us. But we need to work a little more to fully understand its relationship with previous earthquakes."

Noting that aftershocks have continued to occur following today's earthquake, Prof. Dr. Ergintav added that the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes affected a very large area and that we will continue to see such earthquakes within these large areas.
