Foreign Minister Fidan's response to CHP leader Özel on 'action plan': We did not sign the action plan against Israel

Representatives from 30 countries that oppose Israel's attacks on Gaza, which have amounted to genocide, gathered in Bogota, the capital of Colombia, last Wednesday.

A declaration condemning Israel was adopted at the meeting, which was jointly organized by the governments of Colombia and South Africa.

Furthermore, a 6-point action plan against Israel was also adopted at the meeting with the signatures of 12 countries.

Turkey, which participated in the meeting and the declaration condemning Israel, faced criticism from the opposition for not signing the action plan against Israel.

NOTABLE CRITICISM FROM CHP LEADER ÖZGÜR ÖZEL

Özgür Özel criticized the AKP for not signing the declaration condemning Israel during a rally he attended, stating:

“Turkey, which signed the declaration condemning Israel at the meeting in Colombia, was going to sign the 6-point action plan against Israel afterward, and this was going to be announced.

They fled from Colombia without signing this action plan. They were afraid of Trump.”

FOREIGN MINISTER FİDAN'S RESPONSE TO ÖZGÜR ÖZEL'S CRITICISM

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan responded to Özgür Özel, who claimed that “Turkey did not sign the Palestine action plan in Colombia,” during an NTV broadcast he attended.

Fidan used the following expressions:

This is a major misinformation and misinterpretation, and whoever gave that advice to the opposition leader has truly led them into a major mistake.

This text contains a reference to UNCLOS, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Turkey is not a party to this. It is out of the question for Turkey to become a party to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea before the issues in the Aegean are resolved.

If we had signed it just because it came up there, without coming to the center and conducting consultations, we would have put ourselves in a very disadvantageous position regarding a matter we have been pursuing for years.

While saying we are doing something in one place, we would have disrupted another equation elsewhere.

I advise the honorable Chairman to find a more experienced advisor who truly knows these subjects and can explain these processes to him.

I do not want to attribute bad intentions now. I do not have a thought that he wants to align with the Greek thesis. I am just saying this because he does not know the subject, and it would be beneficial for him to sit down and talk with those who do.
