Foreign Ministry statement on Greece: 'Pontus claims are baseless'

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made statements regarding certain events and remarks held in Greece. Pointing out that the Pontic activities that emerged at the end of the 19th century were an extension of Greece's "Great Greece (Megali Idea)" plan, the statement emphasized that the issue essentially consists of the exploitation of a historical process, which concluded with the exchange of Turkish and Greek populations, by subjecting it to baseless claims.

The statement included the expression, "The Pontus claims, which were put forward with populist rhetoric in 1994 by far-right groups in Greece, 75 years after May 19, 1919, which we accept as the beginning of our War of Independence, are baseless."

"A POSITIVE MOMENTUM RECENTLY"

The statement conveyed that the claims in question aim to harm Turkish-Greek relations and put the sensible segments of Greek politics in a difficult position, and noted the following:

"A positive momentum has been captured in our bilateral relations with Greece recently. Our expectation from the Greek government is to take a clear stance against the efforts of some irresponsible politicians aimed at preventing future generations from living in an environment of peace and tranquility."
