16-year prison sentence for former Nurdağı Mayor Kavak

Some defendants and their lawyers attended the hearing held at the İslahiye High Criminal Court.

Kavak, who connected to the hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System from the prison where he is being held, did not accept the charges.

The other defendants also denied the charges against them and requested acquittal.

The court panel sentenced the detained defendants Kavak, A.Ö, A.S.Ö, D.A.T., and M.T. to 16 years and 3 months in prison for the crime of "causing the death and injury of more than one person through conscious negligence."

The panel, which decided to continue Kavak's detention, sentenced the non-detained defendants D.T. and S.S. to 7 years and 6 months in prison for the same crime.

Kavak's trial regarding another building that collapsed in the earthquake, in which 36 people died, is also ongoing.
