From Abdulkadir Selvi to Özgür Özel: I applaud you wholeheartedly

Recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan traveled to the TRNC to attend the events marking the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel also attended the events, and the conversation between the two leaders in the protocol area was captured on camera. Following this scene, President Erdoğan expressed his gratitude for the presence of CHP Chairman Özgür Özel in the protocol alongside the parties of the People's Alliance.

A message of thanks to Özel also came from Hürriyet newspaper columnist Abdulkadir Selvi. In his column today, Selvi said the following regarding the matter:

"Özgür Özel had said, 'We are the opposition in Turkey, but we are a Turkey party abroad.' This approach was also supported by the public. In the past, when prime ministers or presidents went abroad, the opposition would not offer criticism until their return. When the Cyprus Peace Operation began, opposition leader Süleyman Demirel was invited to the Prime Ministry and briefed, and Demirel made a strong statement of support on the steps of the Prime Ministry. 

For a while, this tradition had been broken. Especially during the Kılıçdaroğlu era, the axis of the CHP had shifted. From the Iraq-Syria motion to Libya and Karabakh, Kılıçdaroğlu had stood on the same side as the HDP on many national issues. He had even written a letter to foreign embassies calling for the blocking of Kanal Istanbul. I think to myself, it is a good thing he was not around during the Cyprus operation. He would have opposed that too.

NATIONAL INTERESTS

Özgür Özel acting in line with the state's interests on national issues such as Cyprus, Bosnia, Azerbaijan, and Palestine is a responsible stance. After Bosnia, the CHP leader was in Cyprus. He will soon visit Azerbaijan. This is the desired style of opposition on national issues. Of course, the opposition will criticize, but when it comes to Turkey's national interests, it must also know how to support them.

I watched the CHP group meeting yesterday. I wholeheartedly applauded the words of Özgür Özel: 'We stand with the Cyprus cause. The status of Cyprus is not at the level we want. When it comes to Cyprus, Palestine, or Bosnia, we are a single fist, and we will continue to be a single fist.'"
