Alarming statement from experts following Antalya earthquake: Magnitude of expected earthquake announced

According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) Earthquake Department, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Mediterranean today at 12:09 PM, according to the Richter scale. The earthquake, which occurred 58.86 kilometers off the coast of Antalya's Gazipaşa district at a depth of 32.69 kilometers, was felt in Gazipaşa, Manavgat, Alanya, and surrounding districts. The Kandilli Observatory announced the magnitude of the earthquake in the Mediterranean as 5.1.

FIRST COMMENTS FROM NACİ GÖRÜR AND AHMET ERCAN

Geoscientists Prof. Dr. Naci Görür and Ahmet Ercan evaluated the recent earthquakes occurring off the coast of Antalya. Regarding the earthquakes that occurred off the coast of Antalya five days apart, Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated on his social media account: "These earthquakes are occurring in an area outside the Anatolian fault. A rupture occurred in the part of the Cyprus mainland that subducts under Anatolia. Such tremors are generally not destructive in nature."

MAGNITUDE OF THE EXPECTED EARTHQUAKE IN THE REGION

Stating that the largest earthquake expected in the region could be between 6.1 and 6.2 in magnitude, Ercan said, "The largest earthquake expected in this region is around 6.1 to 6.2.

Even if it were of this magnitude, it would not have a destructive effect in Alanya, Manavgat, Mersin, or in Antalya and Adana. It would only cause shaking," he said.

Ercan noted the following in his post:

"These earthquakes show that they are not within the Anatolian fault. In this region, where the Cyprus arc is located, the earthquake occurred on the segment of the Cyprus mainland that subducts under Anatolia. Africa is colliding with and stressing Anatolia at a speed of approximately 3 to 5 centimeters per year.

As a result of these stresses, ruptures are occurring on the subducting African plate. We saw the shaking effects of these ruptures today. These magnitudes are not destructive in nature. The largest earthquake expected in this region is around 6.1 to 6.2. Even if it were of this magnitude, it would not have a destructive effect in Alanya, Manavgat, Mersin, or in Antalya and Adana. It would only cause shaking."

Naci Görür pointed to the fault line

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür also stated in his post on the X platform, "A 5-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alanya. It is within the Hellenic-Cyprus subduction zone and on the overriding plate."

Görür had warned last week that the fault lines in the Antalya region could produce earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater.
