Back-to-back warnings from Meteorology and AKOM! When will the second snowfall arrive? Date announced

The questions that Istanbul residents have been wondering about for days, "Is snow coming to Istanbul?" and "Will it snow in Istanbul?" have been answered. Following warnings from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) and the General Directorate of Meteorology, snowfall began in the megacity in the morning hours. The snowfall, which is currently affecting higher elevations, is expected to strengthen and continue in the afternoon.

WARNING FROM AKOM

According to the statement from AKOM, Istanbul and a large part of Turkey are coming under the influence of cold and rainy weather originating from Siberia. Officials state that there will be sleet and, in some places, heavy snowfall across Istanbul until Friday morning.

Furthermore, it is estimated that air temperatures will hover between 5-7°C over the next week and that winter conditions will continue to persist.

WHAT TIME WILL THE SNOWFALL START IN ISTANBUL?

Meteorology expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen announced how the snowfall in Istanbul will progress hour by hour:

Snowfall will begin in the afternoon.

Sleet will be seen in low-altitude areas.

During the night hours, full-scale snowfall will be effective.

Although very heavy precipitation is not expected, it is likely that the snow will settle on the ground.

Şen stated that "If we collected this snow for 3 days, it wouldn't exceed 2 centimeters on the ground if it didn't melt," indicating that it is difficult for a permanent snow cover to form in Istanbul.

WHICH REGIONS OF ISTANBUL WILL BE MORE AFFECTED BY SNOW?

It is estimated that snowfall may form a cover on the ground in the higher elevations of Istanbul. Snow may be particularly effective in the following districts:

Arnavutköy

Ataşehir

Şile

Anatolian Side and northern districts

Şen warned drivers and pedestrians to be careful, stating, "When snow falls to the ground, it causes icing if the air is cold enough."

According to the forecasts of meteorological experts, a new wave of snow will arrive in Istanbul on February 13-14.

Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen stated, "These types of precipitation and cold weather will continue until Friday morning. After that, another snowfall is coming. Snowfall is expected again in Istanbul on February 13-14, and this time it will be a bit stronger. It may accumulate more on the ground."
