Backlash against the İmralı process rises from within the ruling party: 'A process that confuses minds'

The İmralı process, which began with MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's call for PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to "speak in Parliament" and was embraced by President Erdoğan with the goal of a "Terror-free Turkey," has become the focus of a new debate.

Following the terrorist organization PKK's announcement of a dissolution and disarmament declaration on May 12, the lack of any visible action on the ground and the successive news of martyrs have fueled discussions about the process. In this environment, a notable statement came from former AK Party MKYK member and former MP Şamil Tayyar.

"THIS SITUATION CREATES DISTRUST"

In a statement on his social media account, Şamil Tayyar reiterated his belief in President Erdoğan's leadership and the resolution process. However, he stated that despite this, the public is not being sufficiently informed, and that this will harm the process.

Tayyar stated, "After conveying this fundamental approach, I must say that the news of martyrs and veterans coming despite the dissolution and disarmament declaration has created a serious sense of distrust."

Tayyar drew attention to three notable attacks in his statement:

The martyrdom of Specialist Corporal Berat Mecit Day in a terrorist attack on April 22

The injury of 10 soldiers in a UAV attack on May 26

The martyrdom of 12 soldiers due to methane gas poisoning while searching for the body of Infantry First Lieutenant Nuri Melih Bozkurt on May 28

Stating that these events "confuse minds," Tayyar said, "I think that if the public is not informed correctly during this process, it will cause more harm to the process."

While emphasizing that the İmralı process should be conducted transparently and the public should be satisfied, Şamil Tayyar posed three critical questions questioning the process:

Why are these terrorist acts occurring while the PKK is in the disarmament phase?

Why is the organization that is supposed to lay down its arms not helping to search for the body of our martyr?

While we have high technology in the fight against terrorism, how do we lose 12 soldiers to methane gas?
